The Guardian: Calder Quartet/Komsi review – Eötvös Siren’s test is navigated superbly

“The Sirens Cycle, introduced by Piia Komsi and the Calder Quartet, may be Peter Eötvös’s latest concert piece, but its operatic origins are hard to miss. What started life as a music-theatre idea, based upon Kafka’s short story, The Silence of the Sirens, has been transformed into an extended piece for coloratura soprano and string quartet, in which the Kafka fragment takes up the third and final part of the work, after settings of the Sirens section from James Joyce’s Ulysses and a passage from Homer’s Odyssey” (…) “Most of all, though, the whole 40-minute work sets a fearsome test for any coloratura soprano, and Komsi passed it superbly, meeting every challenge with real operatic brilliance. ” – Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 4.10.2016

Liza Lim: Singing in Tongues review – visceral, confrontational and totally compelling

“The libretto by Patricia Sykes (who also wrote the texts that Lim sets in Mother Tongue, sung in the live recording here by Piia Komsi) incorporates the legends of Tristan and Isolde and The Mahabharata as well as Greek myths and ideas from Walter Benjamin, without referencing any of them explicitly, while the characters are given archetypal names – The Navigator, The Beloved, The Angel of History, and so on.”

“Wing on Wing, composed for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, is a huge, celebratory piece that deserves to survive beyond its original purpose thanks to its big imagination and the chance it offered to hear Anu and Piia Komsi, the Finnish high-wire soprano twins.”  – Richard Fairman, Financial Times Financial Times – Salonen Total Immersion review – 11 December 2017

Leonidas Kavakos Performs Brahms – Part of Alan Gilbert’s Farewell Concerts
Sopranos Piia Komsi and Anu Komsi, May 19th, 2017

“A recording of one lovesick chorus of midshipmen intoning a low E natural added an otherworldly drone to parts of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Wing on Wing,” an extravagantly beautiful, psychedelic work from 2004 that here received its overdue New York premiere.

Mr. Salonen wrote the work for the inaugural season of the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. “Wing on Wing,” a nautical term, evokes the billowing curves of that building. The fish sounds blend with electronically processed samples of Mr. Gehry’s speaking voice to add a sci-fi gleam to a score that also calls for two coloratura sopranos who produce wordless vocalizations from different points in the hall. Here their parts were sung with voluptuous colorings by the sisters Anu and Piia Komsi. Forward-looking, glamorous and over the top, “Wing on Wing” is the perfect homage to Los Angeles and its eye-catching concert hall.”

By Corinna da Conseca-Wollheim, The New York Times

“Attractive woodwind riffs bubble up through the curtain-raiser Gambit, and the writing for the phenomenal Komsi twins, Anu (Mrs Oramo) and Piia in Wing on Wing (pictured above with Oramo and the BBCSO), previously heard performing the work in the same hall over a decade ago, never repeats the opening siren-like formula for them as they move around the hall. It would be hard to imagine this half-hour extravaganza without them; anyone resistant to the confrontational glamour of the piece would still have to make obeisance to their luminous blend of the vocal and the instrumental,” – David Nice, The Arts Desk
The Arts Desk – Salonen Total Immersion concert review – 11 December 2017

“On a much larger scale, his half-hour Wing on Wing (2004) expands this approach. He wrote it for the opening of Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, a wildly virtuosic piece of statement architecture matched by the Californian confidence of Salonen’s music. The huge orchestra comes with two coloratura sopranos (sisters Anu and Piia Komsi; Anu is married to Sakari Oramo), the electronically sampled voice of Gehry, more drawl than words, and the ‘song’ of the plainfin midshipman, a remarkably ugly fish that thrives in that part of the ocean. The title refers to the maximum area of sail on a boat, which in turn refers to a particular view of the Disney Hall. The Komsi sisters (who sang in the world and UK premieres) were in stratospheric voice and had their work cut out legging it to the uppermost parts of the auditorium for vocalise effects (with results similar to Holst’s Planets Suite), and the piece ranges from a monolithic solidity on a par with ‘The Great Gate of Kiev’ to a superbly realised impressionism so vaporous as to re-site La mer in the Pacific. Salonen’s programme note was useful but you got the gist of the piece without it. It is action-packed music, completely justifying the extravagant forces and played and conducted with irresistible can-do bravura.” – Peter Reed, Classical Source

“The Komsi sisters’ voices soar and fly, suggesting the sound of seabirds flying in the open air, the percussion below them perhaps representing the urban landscape, often twining as if in spirals. Sometimes their lines are long and searching, as if probing the dimensions of space around them.  And sometimes, the turbulence clears and stillness reigns, sparkling repeated notes against clean, clear woodwinds, before we descend into sonorous depths.  Music as sculpture, almost as tactile as it is aural.” Classical Iconoclast

Armi – vahvan naisen muotokuva
Kantaesitys Ilmajoen musiikkijuhlilla. Sävellys Eeva Kontu, libretto ja ohjaus Heta Haanperä.

“ILMAJOEN MUSIIKKIJUHLILLA on perinteisesti nähty vuoroin suomalaista kansallistunnetta, vuoroin pohjalaista maakuntahenkeä nostattavia, useimmiten kaukaa menneisyydestä ammentavia oopperoita historiamme merkkimiehistä. Tänä vuonna on toisin: Eeva Konnun säveltämä Armi – vahvan naisen muotokuva on nimensä mukaisesti kertomus merkittävästä suomalaisesta naisesta, Armi Ratiasta, jonka luova perintö, Marimekko-tuotteet, elävät edelleen monen suomalaisen arjessa ja juhlassa.

“Armi-ooppera on ennen kaikkea voimakkaiden naishahmojen teos.
(…) Niin ikään vaikuttavan roolityön teki Vuokko Nurmesniemenä koloratuurisopraanoksikin taipuva Piia Komsi, jonka tekninen virtuositeetti pääsi tässä oikeuksiinsa.” – Liisamaija Hautsalo

Armi-oopperan orkesteria, Seinäjoen kaupunginorkesteria, johti kapellimestari Kaapo Ijas.

Kokonainen festivaali

“Kokonainen uusi maailma”

Yhden hengen sello-laulu-duo toimi hienosti.

Musiikkitalon Camerata-sali 16.10.2018

Friarjojk och scen (2017)
Piia Komsi, sopraano, Zagros-kvartetti

Italian premiere of Medea / Medeamaterial, Bologna Modern 2017,  October 11-12th, at Comunale di Bologna – Reprising the role of Medea in Dusapin’s Medeamaterial.

“Success for the dyptich  “Medeamaterial” at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna”

“Piia Komsi, soprano is a virtuoso, she convinces us in the interpretation of a woman with the shattered mind who is almost no longer able to express phrases, but only fragments, debris, clumps of memories, crossed by what psychiatrists call “intrusive thoughts”: you can not foresee, control, when they arrive and devastate you, presenting yourself as your true reality.”  – Sandro Cappelletto, LA STAMPA

“Piia Komsi was magnificent, a coloratura soprano with astounding expressive skills. She interprets the lament with her voice, the sounds she produces come from deep within her head, using instruments of the rarest agility and precision. Her singing is music, her body an instrument perfectly tuned and trained. This is an excellent performance, which confirms her reputation as a truly great coloratura soprano whose technique and musicality are of the finest. She reveals the astounding ability of Pascal Dusapin to discover compelling vocal lines, not only because they are extreme, but also because he is able to design for them a most refined orchestral accompaniment, based on structures that I would rather call crafted than mechanical.” – by David Tosci, OPERACLICK
Full review (translated): Operaclick Review

“Piia Komsi matches spectacularly the acting skill of Salome Kammer, making herself the magnetic fulcrum of the monodrama, and astounds us with the intensity with which she performs a score that is almost unperformable.” – by Roberta Pedrotti, translated from Italian,  Critic- Medea versus Medea

“Medea – Piia Komsi, coloratura soprano, singing in an extreme register, has a focused timbre (color) also in middle register, she is also a fascinating actress – clutches in her arms a little doll (emblem of a progeny lost or, rather, never owned?), lamenting of the best years and the freshness of his youth she sacrificed for the glory of her husband,  but she is still younger, stronger and desperately alive than Giasone (Jason), until the definitive detaching from him to the point that, turning to a woman on stage (……name of the woman……) she says  “Do you know this man?”

“Bravissima (Piia) Komsi, great expert in this role, to grasp the sense of an extended lament,
like a harrowing pain – at times seemed almost to howl (amplified by a vocal quartet which
made of Medea “a sort of octopus with five heads”), from the “echo” of the choir, from the
voices of Jason and the Nurse, which seemed to come from another world…” – Gianluigi Mattietti, CLASSIC VOICE

“Piia Komsi, a magnificent coloratur soprano, with a perfect voice and an enormous range, evoques, laments, complains, crying and screaming with profesional rafinesse. A contemporary Medea, with a pony tail, nervous, fragile, and in the first instance very depressed, plots her revenge in dialogue with Salome Kammer who appeared outsized in the video, without doubt a very strong idea.”

Mikkelin musiikkijuhlat, 1.-9.7.2017

Martti Rousi ja Sibelius-akatemian sellovirtuoosit, sopraano Piia Komsi

“Lauantaina ohjelma alkoi jo klo 14 professori Martti Rousin selloluokan tähtioppilaiden matinealla Etelä-Savon Ammattiopistolla.

Brasilian kansanmusiikkina. Siksi hänen Bachianasiensa jokaisella osalla on kaksi nimeä: barokkiin viittaava ja Brasiliaan assosioiva. Pia Komsille tämä teos sopi erinomaisesti. Ihan tuli mieleen, kunVictoria de los Angeles lauloi tätä Rion Sala Cecilia Meirelesissä v. 1976. Pia Komsin hyräily bocca chiusa -kohdassa eli suljetuin huulin kuulosti aivan transsendentaaliselta. Komsi tulkitsi myös Aija Puurtisen Lapin noitia kuvaavat laulut ilmeikkään dramaattisesti.”   – Eero Tarasti, 13.7.2017 Amfion Pro Musica Classica

“To close, Gilbert chose a wild showpiece, Salonen’s Wing on Wing(2003-2004), written for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The title is a nautical term, referring to sails opened for maximum wind capture. Salonen deploys an immense orchestra, crammed with percussion, along with two sopranos, all of whom barely squeezed onto the Geffen stage. An electronic role, impressively balanced by sound designer Ella Wahlström, includes recordings of Disney architect Frank Gehry’s voice, though altered as to be virtually unrecognizable.

The harmonies and textures carry a strong whiff of Messiaen, though Salonen’s palette is even stranger and more wide-ranging. Massive tuttis alternate with delicate duos, vying for attention. Late in the score, a flood of triplets surprises, as if a corps of dancers suddenly entered with a weird tarantella. Sister sopranos Anu and Piia Komsi were extraordinary in the stratospheric vocal parts, starting onstage and reappearing in other spots around the hall. Though Salonen’s epic was designed to show off Disney’s acoustic, the shimmering effects translated handsomely to Geffen.”

World Premiere: Péter Eötvös’ The Sirens Cycle, Wigmore Hall London

Piia Komsi performing with the the Calder Quartet, October 1st, 2016

“(..) Komsi was certainly impressive.” – Paul Driver, Sunday Times (full review pdf-file)

“And the outstanding soprano Piia Komsi, taking over from Barbara Hannigan, was equal to its extreme demands, smoothly switching between English, ancient Greek and German.” – Hannah Nepil, Financial Times

“Most of all, though, the whole 40-minute work sets a fearsome test for any coloratura soprano, and Komsi passed it superbly, meeting every challenge with real operatic brilliance.” – Andrew Clements, The Guardian

“Although Barbara Hannigan was scheduled to sing, I was thrilled to hear that Piia Komsi was stepping in at very short notice indeed, for Komsi’s voice is phenomenal, capable of extremes of pitch and textures beyond the range of most, combined with extraordinarily crisp articulation. Her voice is almost superhumanly elastic, her diction precise even in phrases as convoluted as those thrown at her by Joyce and Eötvös. She embodied the Sirens, supernatural beings who defy the boundaries of Nature. Komsi’s death-defying flights up and down the scale could drive one mad with rapture. Komsi is a vocal gymnast, but so poised that she can make the ethereal sound perfectly natural. (..) Eötvös captures the metre of the poet’s individual language. The lines seem to curve upon themselves like sonorous echoes. The Sirens (or rather Komsi and the Calder Quartet) seduce in honeyed tones: Komsi’s voice warms sensuously, the violins, viola and cello singing along with her, in luscious chorus.” – Anne Ozorio,  Opera Today

“The focus of the evening was the world premiere of Eötvös’s The Sirens Cycle, settings of James Joyce, Homer and Kafka for high soprano. The extraordinarily demanding vocals were taken on superbly by Piia Komsi (sister of Anu) at short notice, following the withdrawal of Barbara Hannigan. Komsi was amazing.” – Amanda-Jane Doran, Classical Source

Concert: Ein Lied für dich allein. Lieder by Anton Webern, Musiikkitalo (Helsinki Music Center), Camerata

October 18th, 2016
Annami Hylkilä and Piia Komsi, soprano
Ilmo Ranta, piano

“In Nachtgebet der Braut (1903), set to lyrics by Richard Dehmel, Webern placed the soprano voice uncomfortably high, but Piia Komsi is not intimidated by its demands. She gets into full swing at the end of the concert with Drei Gesänge op. 23 and Drei Lieder op. 25 to texts by Hildegard Jone. The greatly detailed atonal structures and the immense leaps in the vocal line are stereotypical of Webern’s music. Komsi was well and truly in command of every little detail and nuance, delivering a dramatic performance.”

– Excerpt translated from a review by Anna Pulkkis, in Hufvudstadsbladet: Den Utrycksfullna Webern. October 19th, 2016.

Concert: Here and Now
Piia Komsi with pianist Péter Nagy at the Liszt Academy Concert Center in Budapest, on the 16th of February 2016.

– Anneli Carlson-Suojoki, Keskipohjanmaa, 2.3.2016. Lue arvio kokonaisuudessaan täällä

Martti Rousin nuorista huippusoittajista kokoaman selloyhtyeen laadukkaat soinnit ja Piia Komsin upea sopraano täyttivät Tampere-talon Pienen salin monipuolisella ohjelmalla, jossa otsikon mukaisesti liikuttiin Brasilian viidakosta Lapin tuntureille. Sama asenne leimasi Sauli Zinovjevin (s. 1988) maailman kantaesityksenä kuultua teosta Charged. Hiljaisuudesta käynnistynyt teos rakentui tyylikkäästi käyttäen motiivien ja rytmien toistoa, vahvoja repliikkejä, kaikuvaikutelmia ja tuhteja kudoksia.” – Kirsti Holmberg, Aamulehti, 5.11.2015

“There are concertante roles for Chinese instruments – pipa (a kind of lute), erhu (a two-stringed violin) and zheng (zither). Two coloratura sopranos trained in the western tradition (Anu and Piia Komsi) are placed alongside a Beijing opera diva, the extraordinary Meng Meng, whose vocal slides and quarter-tone ululations alternately allure and disturb. The orchestral writing peers back through Messiaen to Debussy and Ravel. It’s hypnotic, seductive stuff, and Zhang, herself born in Beijing and a major champion of Chinese contemporary music, conducted it with great love and care.” – Tim Ashley, The Guardian. 30th July, 2015. “The composer – a pupil of Messiaen – pits East against West, with a trio of Chinese musicians playing traditional instruments at the front of a large orchestra. A trio of sopranos is secreted further back, the Finnish coloratura twins Anu and Piia Komsi on one side, the Chinese singer Meng Meng on the other. The Komsis vocalised wordlessly to haunting effect, while Meng Meng gave a virtuoso display of Peking Opera-style singing – all bendy vocal elasticity and boingy consonants.” – Hugo Shirley, The Telegraph. 30th July, 2015.

“On stage, few singers fit with sound system have to face a score crazily demanding for the voice, mixing perilous vocalizations, onomatopoeia, shouting and bel canto phrasing. It’s necessary to name them all for this incredible performance. The finnish soprano Piia Komsi permanently extends beyond the hyperacute. Famous for her virtuosity, the greatest contemporary composers write to her attention.”

// Federico Monjeau, Clarin, Buenos Aires

“Piia Komsi kietoi pauloihinsa kirkollisen väkeä, erityisesti Et incarnatuksen kirkkain, viimeistellyin kuvioin.” // Helsingin Sanomat 5.1.2008

“The Finnish soprano Piia Komsi was glorious in this seven-movement composition, making excellent use of every register, ranging from a taut, almost instrumental timbre to a strident folksy cackle. Cantatrix Sopranica (2005) was even more intoxicating. Watts, Komsi and her twin sister Anu performed a vocal powerplay, from three-part hiccups to pastiches of pentatonic Chinese opera and a deranged pseudo-Baroque recitative. At the same time the rock-solid ensemble reconciled clarity with complexity, and anarchy with discipline. It is a promising upbeat to Chin’s first opera, Alice in Wonderland, to be premiered in June at the Münchner Opernfestspiele.”
// Frits van der Waa, Amsterdam Volkskrant, March 2007

“The fabulous Piia Komsi – who already had received excellent critique for her performance in Salonen?s Wing on Wing – supported here by the choir Les Cris de Paris and Remix ensemble pours out her stratospheric high tones (as Medea), weaves her plots, whispers her secrets never resorting to hysteria. She creates before us the delusional hatred of the outrageous Medea in this vast monologue by Heiner Müller. The flexibility, power and control of colours of her voice take this Finnish soprano through the subtly changing and piercing vocal ranges, when the cloack of madness falls, always the stormy Medea, moving and at the same time superhuman.” // Nicolas Baron, Diapason, Feb. 2007

“La bravissima Piia Komsi!” // Enrico Girardi, Corriere Della Sera

“Punctuating the wild soprano leaps and swoops of Piia Komsi`s maid with ear-grating violin slashes? bright soprano in the third scene`s Fancy-Aria, she was the image of a sharp-eyed young waitress fascinated yet repelled by goings on of the idle rich.” // Wynne Delacoma, Chicago Sun-Times

“…in terms of vocal dexterity and razor-sharp accuracy of tuning they (Anu and Piia Komsi & Andrew Watts) were astounding!” // Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph

“…mit excellenter Besetzung: Die hinreissenden Koloratur-Schwestern Anu and Piia Komsi, ein doppeltes Naturereignis an Wohlklang, Schalk und Präzision” // Walter Weidringer, Die Presse, Austria

“Griseyn teoksen esitys oli uroteko. Piia Komsin kellontarkka ääniakrobatia (ja Susanna Mälkin johtama Avanti!) vetivät väkisinkin vieraaseen maailmaan.” // Jukka Isopuro, Helsingin Sanomat

“…i Griseys Quatre chants pour Franchir le Seuil Komsi gjorde mycket stramt arbete med en sångtekniskt och uttrycksmässigt knepig vokalstämma” // Mikael Kosk, Huvudstadsbladet, Finland
